I tuned into my Netflix account and browsed for something to watch and for some reason I ended up with a reality show called Hoarders. Sometimes when people go through trials in life they try to psychologically medicate their pain by hoarding material things. They go out shopping or pick things up from peoples' garbage. After many years of collecting and holding on to these materials that they don't need, it accumulated. Their house is filled with materials and they barely have any space to walk through the hallways of their home. Every room is filled with an abundance of stuff, which includes their bathtubs. It gets to a point that it was too dangerous to live in the house due to fire hazards and health concerns. These people looked fine physically and by looking at the outside of their house you wouldn't think otherwise. Most of the people they encounter with have no idea what they are going through psychologically. Of course, the show will provide them with some help by having them go through a few sessions with a psychologist. The psychologist will walk them through step by step to help them get better. The goal is for them to slowly let things go out of their possessions. Consequently, some of the hoarders have a difficult time of letting go of their stuff. The hoarder's family is being affected by it because the family member (hoarder) is falling apart. The hoarders are so attached to it that it became part of their life. They can't move on...
In spiritual life, we're holding on to something that we can’t let go and it's affecting our walk with Jesus Christ. We may walk around looking nice and dandy, but God knows our inner-beings and He knows our heart. It's affecting us due to our transgressions and God cannot use us. We have baggage that we're dragging around and it has accumulated throughout the years and it's weighing us down. It took over our lives! God has a purpose for us, but we're holding on to the things that are hindering us from moving forward. Some of us are hoarding addictions; drugs, medication pills, alcohol, sexual immoral, food, money, career, shopping, television, video games, and etc... What about our pride, our past, our selfishness, our unforgiving heart... stubbornness, anger, laziness, and the list can go on? On Hebrews 12:1-2, “Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,” and then on verse two, “Fix our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” On Philippians 3:13, “Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead (NLT).” God has so much for us, but if we can't let go the Goliath of our lives, we're unable to see what He has in front of us. As you can see, we cannot serve ourselves and serve God at the same time. We can't have one foot in the world and one foot for God. When Jesus went up to Peter and Andrew and said to them, "Come with me", Peter and Andrew dropped their fishing nets and followed Him (Matthew 4:18-20). Peter and Andrew made a commitment on that day and they became Christ Followers. They’ve let the fishing nets go and went forward with their purpose which God had set for them. God wants all of our being and not our divided heart. God wants us to focus on the things above and not of this world (Colossians 3:2). The world has nothing for us and if we focus on the things of this world, it will only hurt us spiritually, mentally, physically, emotionally, and financially. God must be first on our priority list. He wants to guide us to a fulfilling life. He has a purpose for us, but if we're too busy being distracted by hoarding the worldly things that hurts our spiritual walk, our path is narrower and our walk with Christ is hindered. Let’s pray… “Dear Heavenly Father, the creator of this universe, the One who placed the stars and the moon in perfect location. You are the Almighty God who created us out of ashes and only You who can do amazing things. If anyone who read this post and it applies to them, we pray that they come to you and fix their eyes upon you. Only you can free them from their pains. We pray that they come before You and cast their troubles, worries, and their baggage unto You. As they got up and run the race to the finish line, they will be free from bondage and run the race with joy. To those who do not know you and does not have a relationship with you, we pray that You’ll open their eyes and Your Words will find a good soil in their heart. All these we ask in Jesus Name. Amen.”
