I was one of those people who are stubborn when it comes to making an appointment with the doctor. So a few years ago, I had a sore throat. I left it alone and I was thinking that it would go away naturally. After a few days went by, it got worse. So, I started doing some home remedies by drinking herbal tea with honey and lemon or taking a teaspoon of local honey to ease the sore throat. It went away temporary, but it kept coming back. So, it had already been a week of going through it. I went to Publix to purchase cough drops, Nyquil, allergy pills, and so on… However, the symptoms still existed and it would not go away; instead, it had gotten worse. One night my wife cooked spaghetti and I was starving. I love spaghetti, especially the way she makes it. Therefore, I would not allow the sore throat to prevent me from eating it. So I had a full plate of it. I remember that every time I swallowed it hurt tremendously. I ignored the pain and I kept on eating and suffering through the pain. The spaghetti was so good that I went for seconds. Well, the next day I had to call in from work because I was running a fever. However, I still didn’t call for a doctor’s appointment because I wanted to fight it naturally. The next day I was not any better, I was coughing, my lungs were filled with phlegm and I sounded like I had an asthma attack. I had a squeaking and crackling sound coming from my chest. At the same time, my throat was really hurting. Finally, after almost two weeks of battling it, I finally called the doctor’s office to make an appointment. When I was brought in, the nurse asked a couple of questions and took my vital signs. After few minutes, my doctor came in to the room and asked the same questions. As I was explaining about my symptoms, he was checking my lungs with his stethoscope, and then looking into my ears and in my throat and so on… The doctor was diagnosing my sickness based on my symptoms that I was providing him and what he was finding internally. He was trying to pinpoint the root cause of the problem. After he was done, he looked at me and said, “You have strep throat and it’s because you didn’t come to see the doctor sooner, you also have asthmatic bronchioles.” So, he prescribed me an antibiotic.
Today we are going through the same principle in spiritual warfare. In the physical realm, we see the symptoms of our spiritual battles. The true battle is in the spiritual realm, which is the unseen. Spiritual warfare affects the physical realm. Some of us are frustrated due to our current situations. It wears us out mentally, physically, and emotionally. Some may be on the verge of quitting the battle because they’re being afflicted. The reason why we struggle physically is because we're struggling spiritually. We tend to focus more on our circumstances physically when our focus should be spiritual. Because of our visible symptoms, we try to fight the battle physically. Since we’re not going to the root cause, we get defeated and then want to throw in the towel. If we don’t take care of it spiritually, our situations and circumstances will worsen. We’re emotionally wrecked and our body temperature is boiling hot because we’re cussing and fussing and we’re tempered. Some of us are stubborn and very prideful with an attitude of “I can do it on my own.” Some of us are just going with the motion and hoping that this issue or problem will past. The root cause of all of these is our spiritual infection that affects our attitude and behavior. If things are chaotic in our lives, examine our heart for God. Are we suffering from a spiritual infection by being a part-time Christian and not give all of our worship and praise to an amazing God? Do we give him our best throughout the week or are we cussing and fussing and then give Him our leftover praise and worship on Sunday morning? What are we doing to grow maturely? How's our quiet time with Him? Is there any sins that we're holding onto and are unable to let go of? Is our lifestyle a godly lifestyle or the worldly lifestyle? Maybe we're emotional wreck because our heart is not in the right place. Our heart is divided because one portion is for God and the rest are still in the world. We're spiritually unstable because we're focusing on the wrong things. How can God sustain us when we don't listen to Him? How can we hear Him when we allow ourselves to be more receptive to the world? What we need to do is to call our Heavenly Doctor, The All Knowing, The Great Healer, The Almighty, The Wonderful Counselor, and His name is Jesus Christ! The only way we can fight the world is to fight our enemies spiritually. The only way we can win the battle is through Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ has already defeated Satan at the cross and the resurrection. The only way we can be in that victory is through Him. "Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” Colossians 3:1-2 Instead of focusing on the visible symptoms, we should be gravitated and focus on Jesus!
